Since you're constantly having to make split-second turns and the entire control scheme is based on a "globe-spinning" type method to see enemies on all directions, I really do think that the precision provided by the touchscreen is a must. That said, I think this can apply for any shooter (after playing Kid Icarus and Metroid Prime Hunters, almost every other console shooter feels so inaccurate to me while aiming with a control stick), but it ESPECIALLY applies for a shooter like this one, which combines the split-second decisions required by Super Smash Bros. with the OTS shooter style of a game like Gears of War. But that's just my opinion. Regardless, CPP aiming should've been an option, so we agree there.Answer: Nintendo have an amazing tendency to make rather gimped decisions. Also that I'm not particularly convinced precision is particularly important considering you are using a relatively small touchscreen. You need a level of competent accuracy but I'm unconvinced you need utmost precision.
Have I mentioned aiming with the face buttons is fucking horrible? And aiming with the stylus is horribly uncomfortable? The $1 I spent on my thumb stylus has transformed KI from being a meh game which hurts my hands to a very fun game where my hands feel perfectly fine.
And yes, that thumb stylus is a must for this game. I wish that Nintendo would make an "upgraded" version of their original thumb strap to be like the DX thumb stylus, but with the special strap to keep it attached to your DS/3DS (and of course slightly more compact, so pocket-carrying is easier). Right now, I just keep mine on the carabiner clip along with my keys.
