Gaming Looking to build a gaming pc

This is currently what's in my shopping cart, I'm will not be building it my self but will have a friend build it for me, he can't help me pick parts (long story) I picked out these parts, (yes I know there is no HDD or Disc Drive, I will take care of that later) I guess what i'm trying to ask is, what is your opinion on what I plan to buy, is my psu a piece of shit ? Is it good ? just ok ? Do you see something that wouldn't be compatible ? Do you think I should upgrade something ? I'm also trying to stay on budget 1300-1400.

The usual questions PC designers ask relate to budget, short term requirements, long term aims, user computer proficiency, preferences, propensity to seek "alternate" sources for software... basically what you want and how much you're willing to pay for it. After that, it's all a matter of picking the parts that best fit the person's needs.

Naturally, all you need to do is ask the questions and any number of us can see if we can help. Just keep in mind that many of us will have our preferences between PC/Mac/Linux, AMD/Intel, ATI/Nvidia, Red/Black/Blue, etc.

Interesting selection of components. You've opted for overkill on the graphics yet picked the PhenomII X6 for the CPU. I suppose gaming uses less CPU strength and more GPU strength these days, but I can't help but wonder if it's wise. You could do just as well using a HD5870 and a Core i7-930 (which, whilst being fast, also is very overclockable).

Aside from the omission of HDDs and ODDs (which are usually the last things you think of when building the system), it looks like you've also neglected picking a replacement HSF (Heatsink Fan). Whilst they're not necessary if you ignore the overclocking option, CPUs that operate under lower temperatures will last much longer.

A word of warning, I've just been looking at reviews over the CM692 case (since I've never heard of it before) and it may not be suitable for the HD5970. A quote from benchmarkreviews.com:

The Cooler Master CM690-II can accommodate video cards and other add-in components up to 11.96 inches (304mm) before bumping into the drive cage (less if a drive cage fan is installed). There is more than enough room to fit an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 (10.5"/267mm long) or ATI Radeon HD 5870 (11.0"/279.4mm), but extended products like the Radeon HD 5970 that measures 12.1" long will not fit without excessive force.

anyway your gonna want a full tower for that
something like the CM HAF932 or Antec 1200

you might also want to consider a third party HSF so you can really take that cpu to its limits

@Joe, ironically enough, I was just helping him decide between those 2 cases last night. Ended up deciding on the Antec, because I have one and know just how awesome it is.
