Hii, i have an external harddrive connected to my laptop... but the thing is when im at school or when im not at home, my father or brothers ALWAYS take them without my permission just to "see" my things... soo is there any application or any way to lock specific folders or files??? or to lock completely my external harddrive so they could not use it on another pc??

and yea, i have windows vista and i know i can lock my lap, but for example, if i need to lend my lap to someone and i dont want him or her to see some folder or files... is there any way to do that??

i hate when people sneak into things they dont need to

You can try Folder Lock (Not Free) or Cryptainer LE (Free but max. file size is 25MB. Retail version allows more space though)

EDIT: Cryptainer LE max capacity is 25MB, sorry.

Or if your dad doesn't know his way around a computer too much you could always make the files hidden

Is teh pr0n on your HD all they're looking for?

I wouldn't have any idea in the world why they would want to see your files.

Just try one of them programs, i did head of a program where you can totally lock your hardrive and just password protect it so when you turn it on to view the file you have to input the password. If i find it i will post it here.

I do not remember the exact names of the programs, but just look for hard drive encryption that way you can encrypt the whole computer and no one but the person with the right passkey can even access it. Or you could just rar everything you do not want to be seen with password protection.

enigmaindex: that sounds good, thats the exact thing im looking for, even though that "folder lock" program works very good, if you find it please tell me...

bangbanger: i dont like the idea of just rar everything... that will take years and its not efficient...

i would RAR everything, put a password on it and then change the file extension to .exe or something like that and rename it
this doesnt affect the file or corrupt it so nobody should be able to view it even if they figure out its a RAR file(which is highly unlikely) except you

Use Magic Folders. It's very good. Makes entire folders completely invisible and undetectable in Windows (unlike having password protected/compressed files or folders; those are detectable, and only make people curious), until you press a (custom) predefined combination of keys which gives you a password prompt. The best solution if the computer runs Windows only. If you have dual boot, you have to get a version of it for every OS you run, and set it up in every OS separately. It won't work for live distros run off a CD or USB key, or if the computer boots into DOS.

I think the program you're talking about is Hide Files and Folders, but it isn't free, apparently (unless you know where to look).

I used it a while back, it's a pretty good program, when you want to unlock the files you just hit a hotkey and it brings up a box asking you to enter your password.

Otherwise they stay hidden and unaccessable.

Rather than pay/fiddle with apps that take up space could I suggest a mass renaming batch file you keep zip encrypted/on USB stick/email attachment to rename whatever you like to whatever else and couple with with an inversion/bit rotation: brutally simple to reverse and apply but unless someone decides to look at the hex and is used to it they will likely never know.

Edit: not to mention it avoids the somewhat inevitable f*ck moment 3 months down the line when you forget the password (I assume you do not use the same for obvious reasons).

Failing that "sabotage" the power supply/data cable.
