Can I boot Linux (Ubuntu) from a LiveCD from the free60 project after flashing the disc drive ?

Just flashing the DVD drive? No.

For any kind of user code (be it homebrew or a ROM hack of a commercial game, or unofficial and/or modified DLC/XBLA that is not PIRS) then you need something in the king kong/JTAG/RGH family of hacks. A flashed DVD drive merely allows you to play region compatible (not all games are region locked - http://www.abgx360.cc/verified.php ) copied discs.

Alright then this can be closed I guess, wake me up when there's something like a USB softmod

You will probably be asleep longer than sleeping beauty for that one -- all that we have seen of the 360 security has either MS leaking the keys somehow, quantum computing doing the whole Shor's algorithm to generate the keys or continuing on with hardware launched hacks against the hardware itself.

The "nothing interesting" comment later on in that was notably sent up as it was actually what led to RGH.

yeah, afaik, the exploit on the 360 is using the wrong size address. it's in hypervisor 4xxx (can't recall exact number), so all jtag and rgh consoles use an old hypervisor. originally, you could just jtag the system to use, but it does have efuses like the switch, so downgrading wasn't possibly until rgh. that's not exactly downgrading but taking control of the boot sequence to allow for it.
