People in Haiti eat mud. I am not using this as a force of expression. THEY EAT MUD. Deciding to help them only due to the earthquake is cynic, to say the least. People have been ignoring that country since before it was an independent... and now suddenly they find interest in it.

People are awesome.

Mud eating pics or it didn't happen. I'd love to see these statistics anyway.

Just because a country is "shitty" doesn't mean it doesn't deserve help. People aren't awesome, a person is.

FYI, that's probably the worst comment I've read in a while. You're being incredibly racist and your whole argument comes down to nothing except to not help people who live in a "shitty" country. This is just disgusting, even by my standards.

Food and medicaments are the best option. Still no safe for the corruption in country of the third world -you learn that living in DR- Thanks for the replies.

And Markdarkness what you say is true -in fact, my country is tired of repeat that to France and EU- but despite of everything they need help right now. Cynic or not any help is good help.

There are starving people in every country in the world, not just dirt poor nations like Haiti. Their problem with food is not a lack of handouts, it's a lack of a working government and an effective aggriculture industry. The issue here is not how do we feed Haiti, it's how does a dirt poor nation with nearly zero resources deal with an additional emergency without help.

Don't be an idiot. I said nothing about racism and nothing about not helping people. ENGLISH. YOU SPEAK IT? Then read my post again. I said I find it funny that people only remember that these people who suffer 24 hours of their lives exist when this happens. In fact, I am speaking the contrary of what you are implying I said. Learn to read.

I don't donate money to charities since 30% of it goes to top employees and 40% goes to advertising and promotions and 20% to employees which leaves only 10% to actually go to the cause (this is how the system works). Your best bet is to donate non-perishable food and clothing.

First, that doesn't apply to all charities. Second, even if it did, 10% is a far better alternative to inaction. Unless of course you are helping in some other way?

Edit: http://www.bbb.org/us/article/charities-pr...ke-relief-14690 That link will take you to a list of accredited charities seeking to aid Haiti. You can also find details regarding each charities use of funds.

On another note... I hate to be a cynic, but people are aware that Haiti was in dire need of aid long before this earthquake, right? Why does it take a disaster for the world to stop and take notice. It's like when Haitians die of starvation, it's no big deal. Westerners are too busy getting a second car. But when an earthquake strikes, "Oh no, those poor people. Let me write a check so that I can feel less shitty about myself and show how good a person I am."

Don't get me wrong, people should give and I suppose I am glad they do. I just wish empathy was the catalyst for charity, not the desire to absolve guilt or falsely paint oneself as altruistic.

You know what Prophet, that's why the USA is going to become like Russia...Marshall Law FTW!

Come on Prophet, you expect a majority of Americans to know Haiti is a country? If it weren't for learning about the Earth's continents, people might not even know about Africa.

1. Racist
2. Making sweeping generalizations can be either funny or neutral. Yours was neutral. Making self-depreciating sweeping generalizations make you come off as a fool. Yours makes you come across as a fool.

I see you all have internet. WTF why are you paying for that when you could be helping Haitians not eat mud all the time. You Americans are so bad and stupid WTFLOL!

I would bet dollars to doughnuts, when all is said and done, the US will have contributed twice as much money per capita toward this cause than any other nation, so stop America-bashing guys.

You know it's true. A lot of students I know didn't even know about Jordan until I told them about. If a country doesn't get a lot of news in America we don't know about them. The majority of people who saw Borat didn't know Kazakhstan was a country until that movie came out.

That's usually what happens when you don't learn geography.

How am I being racist?

Of course that's true, but would we have sent any where near the same amount before the earthquake.

PS: Does Obama come off as a fool when he states self-depreciating generalizations about Americans?

I have taken all the geography required but I feel I have learned nothing.

How is this racist? American is not a race.

Alright people. Here's where we go back on topic and not talk about who knows what about what countries.

Otherwise, there's a lock on its way.

I'm all for helping out that Haitians, but there are people dying and starving and sick right here in my own country. I would rather help them first.

Neither is 'African-American' but you still hear it all the time. If you couldn't tell, the post was filled with sarcasm, and admittedly, it came in spurts. Originally it was supposed to read 'OMG Racism' but I made the editorial decision to chop off the 'OMG' part. It made it look better but wasn't quite as effective in carrying the sarcasm.

Okay, back on topic then. Today Hilary Clinton (former first lady and current Secretary of State) was on the news, and she mentioned a number to text (I think it was for the Red Cross) and said that if you text HAITI to that number, you'd be helping the relief. The problem was that she made it seem like it was a sponsored type offer (like, for every text, 'x' company will give 'y' dollars) when in reality, it charges $10 to your next phone bill. Now there's how to get some donations.

Actually the US gives Haiti close to 200 million dollars a year.

Compare that to the 2.5 billion (soon to be 3 billion) dollars we send to Israel annually, and you'll begin to see just how meager 200 million is aid wise. Let's not forget, Israel is a developed nation with a relatively strong economic foothold and Haiti is not. Furthermore, Israel has a population of about 7 million, where as Haiti has a population nearing 10 million.

200 million sounds like a lot. But when you consider the fact that we've spent over a trillion dollars on the Iraq war, 200 million begins to sound like pocket change. America only invests heavily into places that serve American interest. Unless the earthquake brought crude oil to Haiti's surface, I some how doubt America is going to pay any lasting attention to the plight of the Haitian people.

No offense to my fellow Americans. But lets not delude ourselves.

As sad as this is, it's true. Our government cares less about their own sick and dying than they do about the Iraq "war" (more like an Occupation)

LOL i didn't expect such controversy. Indeed, Haiti is the poorest country in America and no one seem to care for it, and try to make Dominican Republic take the full responsability, and i can understand, is easy to think: "they are in the same island, why they can't be a single nation and voila all solve?". And yes they are starving every day of every years and no one do nothing - no from inside or outside- but now they are Really FUCKED. So, they need help more than ever.

I like to think that after all of this, the internacional comunity make some serious struggles.
