The 128gb Micro-SD card i have in my Majora's Mask limited Edition N3ds XL is overkill, 2TB is just insanely overkill.

256 PNY sd card works well on the n3ds. used a sd to micro adapter.

This is slightly off topic: Sandisk recently released a new model Sandisk Ultra which has read speed = 80MB/s = currently Sandisk Extreme Plus!!! The write speed is unknown yet (I need to wait for my order, expecting to arrive next weekend). It's only $24.99 for 64GB and $59.99 for 128GB at the moment on Amazon (Limit 5 per customer).

If anyone price-match it locally (before my order arrives), let us know what the writing speed is.

If the writing speed turns out to be decent, that's gonna be the best budget Micro SDXC deal at the moment (I believe?!)

Presumably one has enough apps/games to fill up 256GB card, does the 3DS supports the full 256GB card? Heard that 3DS only display 999.999 blocks which is around 128GB.

3ds only display up to that blocks
but in actuality, you have way more blocks
