Antoligy:
What in your opinion would be the best computing setup (hardware, OS, programs) for assorted activities (development, general browsing etc...)?
"Best" varies depending on one's own work-flow and qualities one finds important. OSX is my desktop platform of choice, a big reason for that is that is the intuitiveness and pleasing aesthetics of the platform, along with the third-party software library which embraces those principles. There are things I definitely miss from more configurable platforms (like a true tiling WM), but overall the benefits outweigh the rigidness.
As for web browser, Firefox is really the only one that's acceptable as far as I'm concerned. No other browser has the extended feature-set I need for my work-flow (installed extension list
here, screenshot
here, all plug-ins disabled). If there's a Flash or Java dependent page I absolutely must view, Open With lets me push it to Chrome with one click (since it has built-in modular Flash and Java engines).
Non-comprehensive "software I use" list:
Graphics editor - Acorn (OSX)
IM client - Adium (OSX)
Text editor - TextMate (OSX)
File browser/manager - ForkLift (OSX)
Virtual machines - VMware Fusion (OSX)
Application/macro launcher - LaunchBar (OSX)
MySQL client - Sequel Pro (OSX)
Audio player - MOC (cross-platform)
Pandora client - pianobar (cross-platform)
IRC client - irssi (cross-platform)
Usenet client - SABnzbd (cross-platform)
Bittorrent client - Transmission (cross-platform)
Network KM - synergy (cross-platform)
Window manager - awesome (Linux/BSD)
