    - patent credits Masahiro Sakurai

    - patent details a feature for an unspecified shooting game
    - patent involves transmission between two systems
    - includes a process for fusing pairs of in-game weapons together
    - each piece of data in the exchange represents a weapon
    - when two systems meet, this weapon data can be fused into a new weapon
    - fusion costs coins
    - weapons set to transmit cannot be equipped by your character
    - a gun and stick can fuse to create "a weapon capable of firing and using magic."
    - weapon stats are determined randomly from a pre-specified range
    - these include attack power, elemental ability, stamina, shooting range
    - fusion is not limited to StreetPassed weapons
    - fusion can include two weapons found in treasure chests in single-player play

This is no doubt related to Kid Icarus: Uprising. It's just funny to see a patent directly related to this fusion system!

In other words, Nintendo patented "crafting" using the shabby excuse that "it's done via StreetPass, so it's entirely different then every other crafting system".

    ...patenting game mechanics should be outlawed. >>;

I'm glad everybody likes the system because now nobody's going to use it, seeing that it's patented and they'd need to pay Nintendo royalties unless they spice it up enough to make it look "completely different".

I tried to come up with some sort of snarky comment, but I can't even muster up enough interest in this for that. So... cut to Futurama, I guess.

    Warning: Spoilers inside!

    Ah, that works.

this patent has many features, and so does not necessarily mean other games that use these mechanics will get sued for copyright violations. however, if other devs have the gall to rip this feature off point by point, then by all means they should be sued.

but come on, let's be realistic. when have Nintendo sued anyone for anything anyways? i mean, just look at Mole Kart.

"Forever alone" is a more appropriate face.

I also found StreetPass to be pretty dumb. Something that's reliant on heavy distribution of a product is rather stupid. It's still completely reliant on where you are and to have features rely on something that variable is pretty annoying to me. Fortunately these "features" are little more than side distractions.

To be perfectly honest, it'd be great if the game supported "Offline Crafting" aswell for those who don't necessarily feel like going to the closest game store in hopes that someone will have Kid Icarus and choose to use items they obtained themselves instead. That said, didn't we go through that phase with the Pokemon series and version-specific Pokemons? Back then you actually needed a link cable aswell and people made-due.

Typically what I did was my brother and I both got Pokemon games at the same time. I got Silver, he got Gold. I got Sapphire, he got Ruby. I think those were probably the only games he bought, I also got Yellow and LeafGreen (I also got a copy of Platinum for free from a friend who had no use for it). Then we'd trade version exclusives to fill in our Pokedexes.

I'm pretty sure the multiple versions thing was a ploy for the only child of a family to buy the same game twice. Or to sell link cables. Although real bosses used those stupid sensors on the top.

Hmmm sounds like Nintendo wants people to carry the 3DS around with them at all times! Sounds like a good idea to me, but I'm already doing that. Wish more people would then I could get more streetpass data.

Tell me about it. In my school there was only one more friend who had Pokemon. I started with Yellow and he had Blue, in the end I also had to buy Red just so that both of us have all the 151 buggers. Damn, that was an achievement back then... I was so proud of myself, even if we glitch-hacked the Mew's into existence. XD

I remember catching MissingNo on my Red copy aswell... oh, the glitching. XD It was my "Test Cartridge" to do stupid stuff on.

How many friends do I have? [insert number]
How many friends do I see often? [number drops a bit]
How many friends have a 3DS? [number drops quite a bit]
How many friends are getting Kid Icarus: Uprising? [1].

    Ah well, neat mechanic anyways.

imo, Streetpass is more for the people of Japan than elsewhere. While we may not get as much out of it, it must get used a lot there.

Actually, StreetPass is mostly for *kids*.

The density of 3DS users rises significantly whenever you're close to a school, really. "Adult" gamers need to equip themselves with inconspicuous vans they could park near it if they want the pleasure of StreetPassing.

But yeah, Japan is pretty densly populated so it surely works better there.
