the DC's that don't work with burned discs have a little 2 circled underneath them. i encountered one in my lifetime.
They have a 1, actually. The 2 is the second edition Dreamcast, the one that can't run burned discs.

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't see the word "don't" in there.

Anyways, I recommend Sonic Adventure 2, Skies of Arcadia (one of my all-time favorite games), Grandia II, Shenmue, and Marvel vs Capcom 2.

I've still got my launch dc. bought it used from blockbuster video for $20. best $20 i ever spent. I actually worked there at the time so i go an additional 25% off. it was only a couple years old at the time. i've never come across a dc that couldn't play backups. they must be rare. Mvc2 is a must have. thps2 on dc was the best tony hawk game ever, well untill 2x came out on xbox. Rez was pretty cool too. and last but not least seaman was an interesting game. it was the only legit game i owned because it required a microphone attachment to play. i think i paid $6 for it at funcoland. Thats what gamestop used to be called back in the day. i guess i have strange taste in games. for emu's nester dc and dream snes always ran pretty well for me. it's great how many roms you can fit on to a cd-r.

my dreamcast refuses to boot backups, put a real game in and it will run leave it 10 mins and put a copy game again in it and it magicaly boots it seems the motor is acting weird. tried leting it on then booting a caopy but was no go only works after playing a real game for a bit.

You are one of the ulucky ones who have one that can't play burned discs then, or the laser is dead.

I have a modded one
Dual BIOS: Stock and DreamShell
Internal SD Mod
OverClock Mod with Switch.

I can rip my original from GD-ROM to SD Card.

Mmm, Dreamcast...

All you need is a CD-RW drive, no mods are necessary.

Games I recommend: Sonic Adventure 1/2, Sonic Shuffle, Crazy Taxi 1/2, Soul Calibur, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (much better GFX than on the PSX edition), Shenmue 1/2, Quake 3 Arena, Phantasy Star Online (not sure if it'll work offline... heh ^^; DreamArena's been down for a while), MDK2, ChuChu Rocket, Unreal Tournament, Grandia 2, Resident Evil - Code Veronica, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5... Can't really think of anything more, just a quick list from the top of my head.

GET THOSE GAMES.

I had that problem. Either the disc is burned wrong, the laser is damadged/dislocated or the connector tape attached to it is loose. Try "poking" it a bit. I can't think of any Dreamcasts that were backups-protected.

As stated before in the thread, you can try a different brand of discs too.

I just got my dreamcast set up too. I've been playing Sonic Adventure 1, Marvel VS Capcom 2, Phantasy Star Online (offline mode works, just find the universal serial code online somewhere..) and L.O.L.

Hmm. Can you boot games from the card?

Yes, you can load games off the SD card. Not all games work at full speed.
You can rip your own retail games to SD card.
Updates of dreamshell are still on the work and will add more games playable of SD.

The most essential game is Shenmue, it may change your life forever.

SA 1 and 2 are the only games I've ever played that was from the Dreamcast, but if I were you, i would try Shenmue too.

Don't forget Rez

that game rocks.
