Sega has announced a Japanese release date just a few days after the announcement:

December 25, 2008

Nice Christmas present!

The game will let up to four players battle online in the game together using wifi. It will have pictochat-like functions to chat while playing. Note that the game IS NOT A MMORPG, but is a regular RPG that four players can play together in. Think of it in regards to Mario Kart DS.

That's pretty close to release actually. I REALLY hope this comes to the US. It probably will. I think all other Phantasy Star games have IIRC.

I hope to get a router for my home sometime soon, so I might join in online with you GBAtempers sometime!

Looks pretty nice! I have only heard of Phantasy Star because of the exploit on the GameCube, but I might try the DS version to see how good it plays.

"regular RPG"

*twitch*

Where did my hex editor go, this is sure to be awesome.

@Maikel Steneker if you like RPGs do yourself a favour and grab phantasy star 4 (it works well enough on the emulators). 1-3 were ported to the GBA but work well in emulators too.

Oh I wish there was at least character customization. But the RAmar looks pretty awesome, cowboy hat and all.
Also lol at this screenshot (bottom-left chat bubble)... I spent so much time playing PSOv1/v2 on the Dreamcast while I was in highschool.

This is a Phantasy Star Online-styled game. You create your character. You can follow the story line or you can just go into dungeons, kill enemies and find hidden items. When he says "regular RPG" he doesn't mean in the style of the old Master System/Genesis ones.

This is exactly the point of my question about the naming. Why not Phantasy Star Online Zero? Though yeah, PSU was an oddball there too (as was PSPortable...). Hmm.
