if i read correctly once i jailbreak my ipod touch gen 2 i will always need my computer to always open it when i shut it.

Tethered boot
After the install, your ipt2g will not be bootable without assistance
from a tethered computer.

The trick is to not turn off your Ipod Touch. But if you must turn it off, you just need to resend the redsn0w hack to be able to boot it. So yes you do need a computer if, and only if, you turn it off. But my friends has one and they just resprinng to recache, so if you do jailbreak yours, do the same thing. Dont turn it off.

Hm, I shall be getting an iPod Touch for my birthday next week, and I haven't followed any of this stuff particularly. Does jailbreaking it just mean I can download games and apps for free and stick them straight on it?

yes once you do this you can get any app from the apple store for free and you can also download third party apps such as games like nes, gameboy, just recently jailbreaked.

iClarified has some excellent tutorials up:

Windows:

Intel Mac:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=3206

NOTE:
I haven't tried this myself, as I'm an iPhone user. Their iPhone tutorials are excellent IMO.

EDIT:
I have done this with a friend's iPod touch 2nd gen, on Windows XP and Voltage, with success.
The first time it didn't work, but then I restored the original firmware and tried again, and succeeded.
There really isn't anything difficult about it. if Voltage doesn't start install .NET Framework 2.0.

when i jailbreaked my ipod the first one i did was the Tethered even though at the same time i made this thread i found out about the untethered version.although it isn't important right now since the untethered version came out the easiest way to have jailbreaked the ipod was the way i did it by using something called cyw00d.anyway i think you were suppose to do the tethered version first before you can do the untethered one.

anyway for about 2 weeks i had the untethered version.
