Is playing super mario wii/super mario wii mods still not possible?

Remember this was a pretty frequently asked question back in the day and the answer was no is it still possible?

New Super Mario Bros Wii mods can be played with Riivolution on the vWii (or you can patch the Riivolution files into a .wbfs or .iso).

I just realized I worded this completely incorrect I mean to say is playing with gamepad still not possible
