Hacking Is it safe to update a soft modded Wii?

Doesn't matter anymore, lol. Just today i bought a new SD card for Wii use only.
This is done. I've updated and re-hacked all my wii stuff. I've also added new things, like WiiMC and lots of VC and WiiWare Games.
USB Loader GX Forwarder works perfect.

Do not bother with the USB Loader GX full channel. It is dead. Use the 5.1 "UNEO" forwarder and the boot.dol version.

Honestly, SD cards are very cheap. Just go pick up a 8 or 16 GB one and leave it in the console.

It only really needs one. It needs one partition I think set to "Primary" (Not logical.) In order to work with USB Loader GX, oh and the HDD needs to be formatted to FAT32

Other then that your good for the most part. The only thing that may not work with USB Loader GX is if you use multiple partitions, but I haven't went that far to test it out yet.

Unfortunately the full channel is no longer supported - if you find one, it will be an old version and will probably cause you problems with many of your newer games.
For the latest version of USB Loader GX, it's either Homebrew menu or a forwarder - both of which need the SD card. If having an SD card is an issue, you might wan to try eBay - it's pretty cheap to get a small one that you can permanently leave in the Wii.

I stand corrected. I didn't know you could load homebrew off the USB drive itself.
I'm not sure if the forwarder would work though... I defer to better minds than my own for that answer.

USB Loader GX's forwarder checks for the app's boot.dol on USB and SD.

my situation is similar;

it's on 3.3E firmware ,ios55 v18.25, homebrew channel v1.0.3, CIOS36_rev5-64-v1042.

it also has bootmii installed in the NAND.

i'm not sure what to do with it and don't want to cause a brick but i want to get this thing updated and running for them ASAP with little hassle, i haven't been in the scene for a while so my knowledge is rusty lol

is it best to format, update via nintendos servers and reinstall the letterbomb hack instead? any advice?

There's no need to reformat. Just do a network update and reinstall the HBC and current cIOSes.

If you did anything weird previously like modify the system menu theme you should probably see how to remove it first, though.
