Twitter has been hit by an embarrassing security breach.

A group claiming to be the Iranian Cyber Army managed to redirect Twitter users to its own site displaying a political message.

Twitter said the attack had been carried out by getting at the servers that tell web browsers where to find particular sites.

The site said it would start an investigation into what allowed the "unplanned downtime" to take place.

Address books

Twitter was hit by the security breach at 2200 PCT (0600 GMT) which led to users being redirected to a page showing a message declaring it had been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army.

It showed an image of Arabic text overlaid on a green flag carrying the name of the third Shi'i Imam, Imam Husayn.

It also included a poem in Persian which said: "We shall strike if the leader orders, we shall lose our heads if the leader wishes."

Also included were the words: "Those that wage fight on the path of God win."

Some have suggested the attack is retaliation over the use made of Twitter during protests surrounding the Iranian election.

Soon after the images appeared Twitter went offline. About an hour later the site came back to life and appeared to be working normally.

A post on the Twitter status blog said: "We are working to recovery (sic) from an unplanned downtime and will update more as we learn the cause of this outage."

Later, Twitter admitted that its DNS records had been "temporarily compromised". It said it was looking into what happened.

THIS SITE HAS BEEN HACKED BY IRANIAN CYBER ARMY

U.S.A. Think They Controlling And Managing Internet By Their Access, But THey Don't, We Control And Manage Internet By Our Power, So Do Not Try To Stimulation Iranian Peoples To....

NOW WHICH COUNTRY IN EMBARGO LIST? IRAN? USA?

WE PUSH THEM IN EMBARGO LIST

Take Care.

Twitter hack text

DNS, the Domain Name System, acts as the address books for the internet. It tells browsing software where to find the computers hosting a particular webpage.

By attacking the DNS servers the hackers were able to re-direct Twitter users.

"These changes mean that when you or I type a website address into our browsers, we are directed not to the real website but to a second site, set up by the hackers, in this case the 'Iranian Cyber Army'," said Rik Ferguson from security firm Trend Micro. "This has the net effect of making it look like, in this example, servers belonging to Twitter were compromised when in reality that was not the case."

Mr Ferguson said such attacks were typically a result of politically motivated hacking or "hacktivism".

However, he added, some cyber criminals also try the ruse using a replica of a website in an attempt to trick people into handing over login details.

The attack is the latest in a series of security embarrassments that Twitter has suffered.

In August, Twitter was offline for two hours as it struggled to cope with an attack aimed at a Russian blogger.

In July many of Twitter's confidential business documents were stolen in a hack attack and published online.

Many spammers and scammers are also targeting the service in a bid to hijack accounts and piggyback on the popularity of some Twitter users.

Pfft, another ideal threat?! Boy the US network security can really need an upgrade, this will show that we don't need porn or spam on our websites!

Haha. Good idea to tamper with the DNS records and redirect the web address, then try and actually hack the main site itself.

Never really liked using Twitter anyway.

A lot of people probably wanted to Tweet about this one. Oh wait, they can't!

Sly move, Iranian Cyber Army. Although from that name it sounds like they're Skynet or something.

OMG!!! THEY'RE ATTACKING WITH IRONY!!!

Our best defence?!

Quick! Get Steven Wright, Demetri Martin and Mitch Hedberg... oh right. Well, get the other two.

Too soon?

There's no point in living if you're just going to throw your life away like that. Sheesh, can't these people lead their own lives? And...fighting pointless fights is for squares! Kinda stupid to wage war when it's not necessary. And it's like path of God..into...in the name of..

I thought the Internet was world wide, you know, WWW? I'm wondering where they get where the USA controls it. Also, grammar nazi moments~ They don't seem to really type well. Kind of like an 11 year old.

Just some thoughts. /end

1.) the people who do such a thing must realise tht Iran is against this (out of their law)
2.) sacrifice or wrongly interpreted Jihad, is not for such silly reasons or dying without thinking but its to defend a nation and its people and uphold a divine message

Defending a "nation" and upholding messages from little old men in the sky (or whichever other deity they choose to believe in) seem like very silly reasons.

I just loved how they said "Take Care" in the end. That means Iranian radical computer hackers are more polite than the average American troll.

For all we know they're probably not iranian's that did this.

It is however ashoura (a time where muslim shiites mourn the loss of some prophet) so its quite a "bad" thing to do at such a time.

Anyway, not that that it makes a differnece.

Makes me wonder if this may happen to other webistes.

They are a bunch of psychotic Iranian's, what do you expect? They live in a bloody desert, worship false gods and try to act all tough with their Twitter hacking and attempts at nuclear technology. These assholes are just all mad at America because you Yanks are trying to force nuclear regulations down their throats so they don't turn around and bomb ya. I always thought that someone should assassinate the Iranian president or at least drop a couple of bombs on his palace just to shut them fuckers up, and now their little cyber attacks are giving more reason for the world to hate Iranians. Honestly, I hope they all rot in the deepest corner of hell with all this terrorism bullshit, I am getting so fed up with hearing about it and all the innocent people who are being murdered because of these radicals. And yes, the USA technically does operate the internet, or at least the CIA and FBI were involved in it's conception, just these radicals seem to be about 30 years behind in that it was originally designed as a massive network for the US government and turned into a world wide network over time.
