Hacking Install a nand backup without gateway menu?

I apologise in advance, I'm a noob to all of this but my sister updated her 3ds xl by accident to 9.6. I backed up the nand when it was still 9.2, is there anyway to install the backup without access to the gateway menu or is there no hope just as I thought?
