ROM Hack I'm making a FFIV translation patch...

I'm not computer-savvy by any means, so I'm having some difficulty with this (imagine my embarrassment when others claim how easy it is!).

1)Extract the files contained
in the .zip to the same folder
as the FFIV DS ROM.

Alright. I download the .zip, extract it to the folder "Removable Disk" (where I store my roms).

2)Run xdelta.bat and wait until
the black prompt disappears.

Done.

3)Put the newly created nds file
patched.nds onto your flashcart.

The patched file is already on the flashcart...unless I'm supposed to put it in another folder? This is where I lose it.

4)Enjoy!

I can't!

Any help would be appreciated guys.

the contents of the zip file and the game (.nds) have to be in the same folder to work !j

Forget that ^...

you have to extract the contents of the zip file into a folder and do ONLY the FFVI into that folder, NO other games, JUST this one !

I see you 20 users reading this topic! Help a computer illiterate!

Alright, so I tried again and it changed my Brain Age.nds file into "original.nds", so I assumed that somehow was the key. I changed Brain Age back and FFIV (both the .nds and .sav) into original names. I started it up...nothing.

I thought the translation patch for Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia were easy. "Change the name of the patch to the name of the game. Done."

thanks a ton, now i actually want to move on in the story since i know i can finally cast spells without thinking to hard about which is the correct one

Here's the instructions :

-Unzip into a new folder (for example, FF4Patch)
-Copy your FF4JP Rom into your FF4Patch folder. Make sure that's the only ROM in that folder.
-Run the .bat file. When the Command Prompt screen disapears, the patching is done.
-Rename the patched.nds into whatever name you want (Example, FF4Patched.NDS)
-Copy the ROM on your flash cart (or use M3 Manager or whatever software required for your flash cart system).

Don't forget that the ROM must be untrimmed.

1) What does this do?
2) Just the ROM? Just the 'original.nds' file?

Hey, instead of using the cut-the-vowels method in spells, why not just use the original system? I mean, Ice, Ice2, Ice3.

It'd be a lot easier on the eyes.

just take the patched.nds file/rom and put it on your flashcard, and it should work. and make sure that the rom you're trying to patch isn't trimmed, that was my mistake, i was trying to patch a trimmed version and it wouldn't work.

Yah, do you use any kind of DS rom organizer that might trim roms automatically?

Trimming is when the program cuts all the dead space that isn't used on a rom.

Just redownload FFIV and just place it in the same folder as the translator program, and run the program and it should create a patch.nds roughly the same size as the original.nds and just drag the patch.nds to your flashcard and it should work.

I guess it just seems a bit anachronistic?

Anyways, that won't work for items at all, only spells. Might as well make everything uniform in their naming system

I know it wouldn't work for items, I just have a few reasons.

1. Even though you put the rs and gs in there, I can easily see myself getting them mixed up.
2. Back in FFI, I believe items were abbreviated, and magic was 1, 2, 3.
3. I'm used to item abbreviations, but not much in magic. Meteo. That's it.
4. It looks cleaner. Can't do the items for obvious reasons.
5. Wait, why Ydrops? Why not Idrops, or iDrops?
6. Wait, 5 has nothing to do with anything else...
7. Magic seems REALLY scrunched, whereas items are pretty fine.

Sorry if my points are mixed up or anything, and that I even responded on the matter.

I feel lightheaded.

1. I didn't truncate the original spells. I have posted truncated versions now though, that are hopefully easier to understand, that hopefully will be included in the next patch.
2. Yes, I DID say it was anachronistic

. Trust me, I remember booting up FFVI and going "I thought it was lit2 and lit3, not bolt2 and bolt3!". I suppose it would be nostalgic to re-reference those earlier versions, but we are going for a more modern translation. Anyways, spells like Faith, Bravery and Bubble are in the game now, which seems to tailor the game towards the modern era.
3. Ok

4. We've gone through this already oO
5. Wasn't my idea

EyeDrops fits, so...
6. Yup
7. Not our faults

Personal opinion, the name of the items/spells really don't bother me if there's some missing letters. Because there's also some descritive text in game. It could be left in Japanese for all I care, as long as the description would be translated, it's really easy to figure it out

And why are people complaining about Curaga vs Cure3, rather play in full Japanese until the US release?

Ah.

...

How about "Badly Translated SNES script and Nostalgia Edition" translation patch?
