So it wasn’t until recently that I wanted to install homebrew on my 3DS and I realized that I may have screwed up big time. Being the person I was I always updated my 3DS because I never wanted to install homebrew until now. I own Smash, a digital download of Alpha Spahire, and I have a version 1.8 so is it still possible to install homebrew? Thank you.

It is totally fine, you just need and updated Luma3DS or whatever CFW you run. But beware, Nintendo have upped their Anti-piracy in 11.8. We don't know if they see the Homebrew as piracy software or not.

I hate to be a bother but do you have a recommended method of installation?
There are several methods that can not be removed via OFW updates. Personally I suggest NTRBoot as it not only is one of the fastest methods, but you also get a flashcart for DS games.
Of course there are other methods as well that work on 11.8 (and all future updates)
