Damn school admins changed their mind.
Okay, the deal is that MacBooks are going to be a requirement next year for my school. I don't want a Mac, but a month ago, they said Hackintosh was OK, so I was completely fine with this. I was looking for a good laptop to buy (not a Mac one), and then today (the last day of school), they made a BS decision to change the policy to disallow Hackintosh.
I confronted the school's IT about this. They said they supported the use of Hackintosh, but they said they were unable to convince the school admins to change the policy. Sounds like they're banning it just because it has the word "hack" in its name.

And I was going to buy a laptop for Hackintosh last week. I honestly do not want to buy a Mac. I'm not an Apple person, and I'm one of the only people I know that doesn't like/own Apple products (other than a couple of my friends who prefer everything Linux). I'd seriously do anything to not get a Mac and stay at my school, but it's BS how they let a student use Hackintosh last year (where Macbooks were only a requirement for certain grades) and then decide to change their policy.

It's a REQUIREMENT to have a Mac? wow. idiots. Do they really expect everyone (including those that have expensive gaming PCs that will work better) to spend a load of money on an overpriced computer that is used by less than 10% of the population?
That's just stupid.
 
While I agree that it's somewhat stupid to force you to buy a Mac, I can perfectly understand that they won't let you use a hackintosh instead. If your school supports their students running illegal software, they'd surely get sued by Apple.

EXACTLY what I did. Got away with it too. If you really wanna go the extra mile spray paint your laptop white, and throw on some Mac stickers. (Logo, warranty, ect.)
 
Okay I thought those guys were just Apple fans but accepted Hackintoshs but now this is going too far. They can't force you to fuckin spend $1000 on Apple's cheapest Macbook. What is it that fuckin OS X can do that Linux or Windows can't? I don't want an answer from answer from these guys involving malware and shit cuz all I'll say is either "Linux bitch." or "Oh did you get that update to remove MacDefender?". Malware my ass. The following explains it:

If their using Mac-only applications or their network only works on a Mac then I call bullshit. I'd follow Lunatics advice; screw them. Build a Hackintosh and and stick an Apple logo on it. If they don't like it, ask them for $1000 to buy an overpriced shiny box that does the same thing.

In all seriousness, find a used Macbook somewhere. If they allow desktops, buy a Mac Pro's case and stick PC hardware in it. Oh wait that's already what it is.

Hm a Mac Mini could actually work too but it's not a laptop.

In all respect to Apple, OS X is a great OS but to charge your customers with an "Apple Tax" added on to everything just because having to take control cost money then boo hoo. Stop being so vertically integrated.

Hackintoshes aren't THAT illegal. If you buy the OS then it isn't piracy. You can install OS X without a special distro. The only thing you violate is Apple's EULA which states that Mac OS X can't be run on any unsigned Apple machine. However if it has an Apple sticker, hell I'd call that "signed".
 
I want you to show up to class without any laptop and just laugh obnoxiously. Just keep laughing and don't stop. After someone asks you the 6th time (the 6th time is very important for this to work), tell the entire class/school "They are ****ing idiots" and walk out.

But there are ways of installing legitimate copies of OS X on a PC. Sure, Apple may not approve, but it's still legal.

But with the requirements, they're renting out those C2D Macbooks for $300/yr. Not that bad, but they're too crappy for me to work with.

EDIT: The IT is fine with it, it's the school itself that doesn't want you to use it.
 
Is your school sponsored by Apple or something? When I was at school the only material requirements were pens/pencils etc and a PE kit and even those were provided if you really couldn't be arsed to bring your own.

Seriously. I'm in college and we aren't even required to have computers (the school has several computer labs, as well as roughly 100 computers in the library for students to use).

By the looks of it it's a posh school, as the OP said, he doesn't want to leave.
I still thinks it is stupid do what first poster said.
Or, go buy a really old macintosh and take and see what they say.
Edit: In year nine at our school, we have to get an Inspiron One netbook, shitty specs, win 7 starter and resrtrictions, aero and other things turned off.
 
My advice: Make a Hackintosh anyways. Unless you have a computer class, chances are the teachers will be too stupid to know if it is a hackintosh or not. Add an Apple sticker and even the administration wouldn't know.

Schools aren't very computer smart.

What a pathetic choice of hardware for IT lessons. I'm completely speechless. What difference does it make if all laptops nowadays are pretty much "IBM-Compatible PC's"? It's the exact same hardware with different stickers and price tag.

Hackintosh ---> Dual Boot.

If they will try to expel you, just sue them. OSX is OSX, if you really HAVE to use it, the hardware it runs on is irrelevant.

ALTERNATIVELY go a step further. Buy the cheapest Mac you can get online. Not a macbook. A Mac computer, for example a G3. Then, get a trolley, put the tower on it, along with a colourful Mac monitor and push it into the school, claiming that's your mac. Jack in and have fun TROLLing.

Mac's a Mac, isn't it?

However, ever since September last year, we have a new method, using a small boot CD called boot-132. If I understand it all correctly, it uses a modified Darwin kernel to bootstrap a regular, unaltered Mac OS X Leopard retail disc. Since Darwin is open source, this is completely legal, and doesn't break the DMCA since you're not actually hacking any protection measures. As soon as the regular retail disc is "running", the installer pops up, allowing you to install Mac OS X as if you're using any regular Macintosh. Once the installation is completed, you use the boot-132 CD to boot into the newly installed Leopard, and from there you install a bootloader (Chameleon) which enables you to boot without the CD.

we have 2500 computer systems on campus, laptops arnt required, but its nice to have your own
