I used an internet browser method to access homebrew but the thing is I want a channel for it, but it only supports the newest version. The method installed 1.4, not 2.1. So how do I update 1.4 to 2.1?

This is what I used to get homebrew:

1.x series = elf/rpx edition, to be used directly via browser exploit/haxchi/cbhc/etc
2.x series = channel version, to be installed and run under cfw

If you want to install the channel version, you use a cfw and a wupinstaller-compatible homebrew (re-enter the 1.x HBL to run it since of course you don't currently have the channel version installed), like you would do to install any unsigned WiiU title :)

I read the instructions and it starts up but then it loads into a black screen.

Then I restart it, boot the launcher channel and get this:

An error has occurred. Please turn off the Wii U Console and try again. Error code 199-9999
