I am currently trying to launch a prototype version of Sonic 4 Episode 1 (don't ask) but every time I try launching it, it gives me the error "This channel cannot be launched because there is a newer version available." I cannot find any information online about bypassing this error, so I am wondering if anyone here has figured out how to launch an older version of a WiiWare title for some reason

Try to launch it in Triiforce or USB loader GX or something else that can boot directly into the wad
...what the hell? Can you provide a screenshot? Because I think nobody's ever seen an error like this before, holy hell.
Here is an image of the errors, I tried copying it to the Wii since so I could test it on USB Loader GX (I moved it to the SD Card so all of the WiiWare and Virtual Console stuff wouldn't take up any space on the Wii) and I guess since I tried launching the application after moving it to the SD Card, it refuses to move back to the Wii as well

Wow. I would say that you should make a copy of the SD card's nintendo folder to save for later, but also maybe try using Priiloader's ability to turn off move/copy restrictions via the hacks menu.
It is off, Block Online Updates is also off but it didn't fix it, I assume that this specific error was just unknown by the Priiloader devs because who the hell is trying to play old versions of WiiWare games, so it just doesn't get patched

And secondly, how the hell would the Wii know you installed an older wad unless it's for a system title like the shop channel?

I would assume the Wii Shop servers keep track on what the newest version is, since this version of Sonic 4 was accidentally released on the Japanese Wii Shop Channel, and I think the download servers are still up, so it might still detect which version it is

I see....
Maybe disconnect your Wii from the internet, uninstall the game, find a WAD from uh... well.. I can't really tell you where, and try using that.

I did it (but in my case it was a bummer)
I had the same error with an older version of bbc iplayer (it didn't work like channel gave error at launch)
but i managed to copy it over

i know this is a bit late but it works what you do is first (backup the stuff you want to keep)

then Factory reset

Setup Wii

use DNS jailbreak

(all wile not updating)
then you use those keyxxyz or something like that to extract the key's
then you use that riiconnect24 patcher to install that wad directly
at last you can copy the thing over no problems then if it won't launch for some reason then you use priiloader or something like it

Huh? what the fuck is this error? How does it tell the channel version!?!?!

it means like your trying to get an older version of an wii channel on to your wii by copying it from sdcard (but cause they know its too old they simply block you any acces to it you can't open you can't copy and can't move)

OP must have a TMD with a higher version number in their NAND, and they're trying to move an older version from an SD card. There must have been a way to trigger this officially: get a game from the WSC, move it to SD, then that game gets updated (e.g. My Pokémon Ranch or LostWinds had updates), download the update to your NAND and delete the game from data storage. The newer TMD remains in that case.

And by the way this is a stupid check because it would stop you from playing your legally obtained games without an internet connection, and also when the WSC dies.

The WSC probably won't die.

Eh, Nintendo could renew them. They've already spent more than enough time keeping NUS up.
Those are embedded in IOS so they would need to push a global system update (at the very least IOS62 and IOS80) and I don't see them doing that. Plus they don't authenticate anything at this point. Nintendo already said that at some point they would stop service.

kinda late but they did a wii shop maintenance 2022 so the chances aren't that low.

Btw. Wii Shop Channel uses IOS 56, IOS 62 is used by Wii u transfer tool and wii system transfer. They also have to update IOS 55 for Zelda Save Data Update Channel and maybe internet channel (not sure if it uses a certificate at all)

They would probably just stop verifying client cert.
