I have the Hitachi 078fk drive for my 360 and when my friend can't get the computer to recognize it. It's running Windows 7. His computer has XP but no SATA controller. Are there drivers that work on Windows 7, or does he have to install XP on his friend's computer?

You need SATA and you need right chip on that to.
Its has nothing to do with Windows 7 or XP.

He said the computer did not recognize the drive because it was running Windows 7.

What do you mean "right chip" you mod the drive.

you need a compatible SATA chipset to mod it

any controller card with VIA 6421A is highly recommended
alot of the built in chipsets do not work

How do you know if you have the right one?

Would a SATA to USB work?

    Dont use USB.
Use onboard controller with Via chipset. most of them works.
Or get a pci Via controller board.

I do use Windows 7 and I dont have any problem with it.

I don't have an onboard controller with a Via chipset, I only have USB.

The only SATA controllers I have are my USB Ones and the one in my old Laptop.

I heard SATA cards are expensive and I don't wanna wait for one to come in. I need this done yesterday.

    Expensive?
Sure some of the big muti port RAID things are pricey but the basic sata card you need will run you about $10-15 US
You need a "specialist" one as there are many ways to implement the sata spec that work for most things but to get it so that it works for what you need for the 360 has only been found in a select few cards (the via 6421 being the most hassle free, onboard NFORCE (Nvidia) post 2 series being the next).

The 0078FK Hitachi is fairly good (the older Hitachi's are even better- they most certainly can be flashed with a USB to sata adapter) however so you might be lucky, word to the wise though do not touch it with a silicon image device unless you want to corrupt the drive (provided it is pre August 11th update we might be able to pull it back but it will be a lot of hassle).

Read a copy of textbook's 360 tutorial although I would consider something like jungleflasher rather than the iprep app it suggests if you are going to follow software guide part of it:

So can this be flashed with a USB adapter? The drive was made in 2006, I can't remember the month.

Outside chance at best I would say. As long as it is not based on Silicon Images hardware I would say give it a go and make sure you dump the key several times.

As for drive being made at some point that does not apply here; I was talking about the 360 updates. Now we have homebrew (but only for those who have yet to do the August the 11th update) you can use it to snatch/generate the key from data contained on the motherboard*.

*yes this does mean those who messed up and flashed without a proper key or something similar may be able to "unbrick" their machines.

I will however say trying to accomplish 360 flashing on the timeframe you appear without doing the reading behind it all is the primary reason for the "help my I messed up flashing" threads I see anywhere that deals with 360 flashing.

I read a sticky here and it says it's so easy "a retarded racoon could probably do it"

Don't I just detect the drive and run the program to dump the keys and flash the new ones?

What do you mean "Silicon" how do I tell if my drive is one?

It is that easy, it literally amounts to
dumping unique drive key (all but the 7 series liteon can have this done with nothing more than a sata lead and a powered drive, the 7 series liteon needs a simple key you can either buy for the price of a game or build from basic parts)
using key to make firmware for drive (amounts to pressing load dumped key, load base hacked firmware, press OK to make new hacked firmware that includes keys).
Flashing said new firmware to the drive (selecting said new hacked firmware and pressing do it to it).

Where the "difficulty" comes in is that there are multiple drives with some possible subtle differences; the hitachi will need to be put into mode b (nothing drastic and it is covered in the link I gave earlier) and people who fail to read up can often skip a step or do something wrongly (mainly when we have to play with hardware but not unheard of at the software stage of things).

By "Silicon" I mean the people that make your sata adapter; if the base chips come from Silicon Images leave it alone and just buy in a sata card (the VIA 6421 series is a bit old now but still found in real world/mainstream shops), note these companies sell their chips to makers who then bundle them in hardware; think when was the last time you actually purchased an "NVIDIA" graphics card and not one with an NVIDIA chip but made by PNY or the like?
As for how to tell it can be tough, I usually find the drivers a good indicator as most of these companies that buy in chips will usually just slap a bad installer for an old version of the stock drivers together and call it a day.

Are you saying if I have the wrong SATA controller it will brick my drive?

If I have the Silicon one and put my drive in will it detect my drive and appear to be OK?

If you use a silicon image sata controller on 78/79 drive, then yes, you'll end up with a brick. It will detect it fine, but flashing it with it, will brick it.

But I don't have time to wait for it to come in... I'm going to my friend's house tomorrow and it's the only chance I'll have in a long time to mod this...

OK thanks, when I tried searching based off the other link I got nothing:
    http://shop.ebay.ca/?_from=R40&_trksid...-All-Categories

    So that one will work?

As a side note, can I boot off the device attached to the IDE port on there? I have a computer and it appears the IDE controller on it is hooped.

This way I can make it work again and make it my "Xbox drive flashing comptuer" because my two main computers won't do because one is a laptop (No PCI port) and the other only has one free PCI slot and I'd like to keep it free) where as this computer has a few PCI slots free...
