Hey guys,

I’ve got a few GBA SP consoles, looking to connect with people to hopefully help me with a wee problem with my ags-101. Thought I was good at fixing things but this issue has me stumped

Hi Nicky :)
Welcome to this exclusive circle of GBA enthusiasts, with which it all began and whose interest has never waned; today more loved than ever.

It's not really clear what the problem is with your GBA SP, or even the point of that picture...

Hey thanks for asking!

It seems my volume switch is acting like it’s volume ‘on full loud’ or ‘off’ there’s no volume adjustment.
Do you think this would indicate the volume switch assembly needs replacing or could something else be the problem?

Thanks for your time :)

Interesting failure. In other things that would usually be wear or corrosion in the mid point of the volume wheel (or there being some kind of hard lock/bypass at the extremes, think with a clunking lock you might have seen in some devices, but the GBA is not sporting such things) but I don't think I have seen it on a GBA before, though it is now long enough that I suppose we are going to start seeing such things and the GBA is the same as any other audio sporting device with a similar setup as far as what it could be prone to.

Some might get around it by getting some contact cleaner in there and running the wheel back and forth, a few mad types might even disassemble the volume wheel and clean/fix it, most would find a replacement and there does appear to be a few around. Fairly basic solder job as well.

Thanks fast6191,

I got some IPA in there and ran it up and down alot but no improvement. I've found a second hand replacement on Ebay, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else you guys knew about before getting the soldering iron out. Ill take it apart and have one more close look at it all today before I buy a second hand switch.

I appreciate the input. Keen to learn as much as I can about the GBA SP

Now the power switch is highlighted here. Please look at it. Notice how there is a notch/peg that the external trigger has to be aligned with. Now it's hard to see, but the volume slider works with the same kind of mechanism. If the external slider is not connected properly, then it will misbehave.

It is either that, or damaged I believe.
