Well since I realize my PC is shit, and I want to build a PC...

Using extensive Newegg research, I've come up with this parts list.

So I want to make this PC have a good price-to-performance ratio while being relatively cheap (preferably less than $600 total, may go higher as a last resort).
What I require:
-the video card (main reason for upgrade from DDR SDRAM, P4 Prescott and integrated graphics)
-at least 500GB hard drive
-DVD burner
-802.11n network adapter

Want:
-preferably quad core CPU with hardware virtualization
-??? (Ask.)

I plan on running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (May change depending on hardware compatibility and memory size). Already got that covered so it wasn't included in the price.

i recommend using intel processor and stay away from biostar mobos...get a gigabyte good price and reliable. been using gigabyte for 3 years never had any issues

Like joe said the Mobo isn't good at all but since it seems like you want one that can run 2 graphic cards I'm having trouble finding a good one at your price range and you picked a anothlon 2 becuase you wanted a cheap quad core but you can get a triple core phenom 2 for $120. Any way here's a better cheaper hard drive

I don't want it to run two graphics cards. I want it to fit a two-slot graphics card.
Anyway I get the mobo and PSU, so I'd better replace those.

Also, about the Phenom II X3:
That eats up a lot of my budget when you factor in the mobo :/
Found a $100 Phenom II X3 710, the $120 part is a 720 but it's also a Black Edition, meaning unlocked multipliers...

I upgraded the HDD to a Seagate 1TB, went for 4GB RAM, had already bought a ASUS burner for $20 last Dec., replaced the PSU in the Rosewill case with a 600w Antec PSU (which was worth it) and yes you will need over 500+ to run the card at least and if you want SLI then more juice, just sayin' skirting your power needs won't be good for the system.

And I'm really happy with that MSI board, nice features, excellent upgradability to extend the life of this system for a long time, like you I got Windows 7 Pro for free so all good there, the only thing I am kinda irked with is that GPU you got, I got the 4870 as in the build and even though I'm happy with it, (and got a game I wanted with it too) it would have been nice to have a better model with more onboard RAM for the same price (I payed about $20 less) but them's the breaks.

In the end I spent a little less than $700 because I also got a APC UPS 700W unit, just because of power interruptions where I live.

Well the Powercolor AX5750 videocard I chose has DX11 support - main reason. Plus fairly cheap, don't need the 4870X2 or GTX295 kinda cards. You need to shop around a bit more IMO heh.

The Pentium E5200 isn't that bad, but I would rather get a E6300/6500 for the hardware virtualization. I think E5200 only has Intel VT on certain SKUs.

Honestly, a 1TB drive is a choice I'd like to make, but 500GB will do - it's a difference of only $15 though (between an earlier linked 500GB and the WD Caviar Green 1TB), need to weigh that choice.

Will probably go with 2GB, I can live with that I suppose.

I know that you're trying to keep the price down, however you can pick up an intel i7 920 quad core processor for $199 at microcenter.com

in addition, I'll throw in my 2 cents (and approval) about using a corsair psu. they are really quiet and hold up very well. the modular ones are really nice in that you only have to connect the cabling that you require instead of having to rubberband or twist-tie up a rat's nest of unused cables and figure out where to place them inside of your case.

This is true, I've got the Corsair TX850w - It's not modular, but I can recommend it - its an amazing PSU

Haha - as much as I would love a Core i7 (or i5/i3 even) there's no way for me to afford it as of yet.
