Just got a DSTT and loaded 1.08 in the root dir of a 1 Gig and a 2 Gig micro SD. All I get are vertical lines on both screens. Do I need to have the files in a directory? I also tried 1.07 with the same results.

It sounds as though whatever you used to unzip the archive didn't retain any of the folders, which is probably why the skin isn't working.

What program are you using to unzip the .zip file containing the firmware?
