Homebrew [HELP] How do I use stuff like online play, without updating?

You can try by manually updating the friends system module to the latest version for the region of your system menu, some games and apps check NVer by thought.

Most of games uses the Friends Services for online multiplayer. Since some time ago (2016 I believe) Nintendo has changed it so the server checks the fpdver version string of the friends system-module so it won't let you play unless you are using the version that the server is looking for (they usually update it to the latest update one after one or two weeks after the release of an update that updates it); so installing the latest one should let you play most of online multipalyer games.
...
Anyways.
You can get the lastest one as a ".cia" from the CDN with programs like 3DNUS: https://gbatemp.net/threads/3dnus.376488/
The Title ID of the friends system module is "0004013000003202" for all regions (this title is the same for all regions, but note that other system tiles usually are different beetwen different regions) and the 11.8.0-41 version is "17411".
After you have that you should be able to install that .cia manually without any problem with a .cia installer in your console, if so reboot the console after you installed it (power off it and power on it again), then check if you are able to open up the Friend List without any problems.
While it may not cause any problem, it would be good if you backup your Nand before you install it, it's also good to note that 11.7.0-40X can still use online play for now (it probably will change soon to only the latest system update at the moment even so).
