By "it" I assume you mean playing games you do not own yourself (piracy)? Yes, it works pretty damn well. Have a look around here, if it didn't work on the Switch 1, this forum would be a lot more empty.
It is not hard, provided you can read and follow written instructions.
Note: not every Switch 1 can be hacked using software only means. Browse around ebay and look for a V1 unpatched switch vulnerable to the RCM bug. These are still available, and usually advertised as such. The guide
here is pretty much the gold standard on how to homebrew your switch 1 once you have a unit that is exploitable.
Do you need a special browser or go through a million hoops to install games on the plattform?
You will need a title installer. The guide only takes you through to getting homebrew up and running. Grab something like DBI (a piece of homebrew), the tool you will use to install your "backups" (nsp, nsz, xci files etc.). It's by far the simplest method. Other installers exist, Tinfoil being one of them, I always had great results using DBI though. Plug switch into PC, open DBI, press X, drag and drop the files, installed!
Once the console itself is modded, is it easy to get games for it?
Where you get your "backups" from, I can not tell you, nor can anyone else here, but lots of places exist that are readily found by googling around for a bit. It is easy to find games for free.
I have a dream of just owning a switch lite with all games on the SD card
That probably won't be feasible, since the Switch's library of games is
massive. But you can have something like NAS that holds the entire switch library, and set up something like Tinfoil to install games from there on-demand, which kind of works out to be the same thing I guess. How you're going to download the entire switch 1 game library is beyond me, but hey, you can try. These are not the flashcard days anymore where you can fit the entirety of the, say, GBA library on a single card.
I wish someone would have answered all of my questions when I first started out, so I'm returning the courtesy. If you have any further questions post them here, I and others will answer what can be answered.
