alright so my ps3's hdd just gone corrupt, i get "the system storage cannot be accessed" everytime i try to format it, so i gave up, instead of buying a new hdd i decided to use an old 40gb one, i plugged it in, put my old the cfw firmware on the usb, the first time it got stuck at 98% just preparing, i tried again and it went throught, it boots up starts updating, then it gives me an error, keeps trying again after 60 seconds, tells me to shut down ps3, pull the plug for a while then try again.... what am i doing wrong ? are there more specifics to know about the software ? i can remember that mine was 4.76 ferrox but thats it, should i try another one ? what could be the problem ?

1. The PS3 does not see the firmware update equal or greater than what it had. Try another CFW, or same CFW with the PS3UPDAT.PUP from another source, or different USB device. Make sure the USB is in the rightmost USB port, with all other ports left empty.

2. The HDD cannot communicate properly with the PS3. Try to reseat the HDD, completely screw and close the HDD into the chassis. Try another HDD.

3. Something else?

so is it okay to try another cfw ? but it has the same version ? i'm going to try 4.78 ferrox and tell you how it goes, are you sure i dont need to check something like wether the software is eu or na or something else like that ? sorry i'm not very familiar with how cfw works, i just wanna fix up my ps3 its been like this for a year, went throught 2 hdd's just like this... pulling the plug or beind dropped

Yes, it is okay to try another CFW with the same or higher version of firmware. Firmware is region-free, especially CFW. Theoretically, if there ever was a problem with region-specific firmwares, it would only affect you by not playing disks from other regions or maybe no video because of different television standards.

ok so i just tried the 4.76 ferrox and somehow it worked this time, but of course with my shit luck, another problem arises, now i downloaded multiman, and it freezes on startup, i have to keem pressing the power button to force shut the ps3, tried older multiman version, it worked once then froze, now it freezes on the opening screen.... everytime i force shut the ps3 it tells me system files must be repaired, i'm afraid its gonna mess up this other hdd again, could the problem be from the ps3 itself ? is there some alternative to multiman that is more stable ? i'm really tired of this and just want to play some games man

thank you so much man, it worked now, only freezes when i press the ps button and navigate while multiman is running, but i can live with that, i know i must have annoyed you but just one last question, does my cfw support ps2/ps1/psp games ? or do i need to install something else ? i've opened multiman file explorer and cant find the folders for them, should i just create them, put iso's in and i'm good to go ? or is there something else, i noticed in the website when downloading the firmware, it says "PS2/PS1/PSP support" but i'm not sure what that really means

Yes, the folders should be manually created in dev_hdd0; just drop the unencrypted ISOs in their respective folders. "PS2/PS1/PSP support" means that those games will play be able to be played, pending compatibility. Any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

PS1 = PSXISO or PSXGAMES
PS2 = PS2ISO
PS3 = PS3ISO or GAMES or GAMEZ
PSP = PSPISO (boot from 'Minis' or 'Remasters' launcher)
DVD = DVDISO
Bluray = BDISO
other = ISO or video or GAMEI or ROMS

more problems.... i didnt even bother trying retro games, i just downloaded a 6gb game and tried putting it in GAMES folder, first i tried to ftp, but the ps3 froze, then i put it in a usb stick and it also froze, i kept trying but to no avail, i tried playing it straight from the usb, when it launched it froze during the installation, now the ps3 was telling me the data is corrupt and it needs a new format... done, i installed the same multiman version that worked before... freezes when its installing data on the hdd.... another format needed, after it was done i could only see the background theme but no menu's show up, and it wont shut down, had to force it again, now it just boots up to a black screen, i launched it in safe mode and tried a format, nope, "system storage cannot be accessed" now i'm trying to system update as a final solution, but i know the same problems will show up again, from my experience before this ps3 has always froze occasionally, and right before the last freeze the menu's will be slow and game load times too, is that a trait of cfw systems or just a symptom of a bad hard drive ? do you think i should get a new hdd or even an sdd or am i just wasting my money ? i'm thinking it could have some problems with its flash memory or something else internal

it could be just overheating. Ps3 s are amazing for us in canada we save up on heat.

could overheating cause the frequent freezing ? because i remember going hours in some games with no freeze, the fan blowing like crazy completely ruining the sound experience, but no freezing, i have a slim ps3 so i thought they fixed the heating problems with lower consumption and better soldiering, you guys are lucky in canada, your ps3 must be running quiet as a mouse, so do you think i should bother buying a new hdd ? i found a good deal for a refurbrished sshd, 30€ for 500gb, thought about ordering it but sadly the corona lockdown situation in my country is really bad, but i can wait, i'd rather spend one last 30€ to try and see if this ps3 is salvagable, otherwise i'll just save up for a ps4... i used to play rdr2 for like 8hrs straight on my cousin's ps4 slim with the fan at max speed and it was summer, it absolutely never froze not even struggled with framerate

I would try a different game manager before anything, followed by an internal cleaning and repasting the heat spreaders if it's never been done before. The PS3 is old and engineered at an earlier time; the PS4 is able to handle heat comparatively easier. A new drive would be my 3rd option. SSD is overkill speed-wise, but I like not worrying about extra heat or slowdown. An SSHD is also a fine option. The Slim can take a beating more than the Fat, that's why I think it's the game manager or the drive.

well its too late to try another game manager, the hdd is gone now, ps3 boots up to a black screen and power button is unresponsive, cant even go into safe mode, i tried another broken hdd just to check if the ps3 is still okay, it goes into safe mode fine, so its the hdd, even before this happened when i turn it on it loads the theme for like 3 minutes before showing any menu icons or anything, i'm guessing its a symptom of a failing drive, i really cant open the ps3 and have no idea how do any of that, but i remember that my ps3 had a really loud fan spin, is that normal or could it exessive heat and be the cause of all this ? considering i live in a pretty hot area, that was the reason i started positionning it vertically and i believe that killed the first hdd, now i've bought good bluetooth headphones so i dont care about the noise, but i remember the ps4 slim had the same loud fan noise if not worse, i'm gonna order this refurbrished sshd the moment this lockdown ends and see how it goes
