Hello! Newbie here!

I recently unearthed my nintendo wii from a decade ago. I only have the unit now, and have lost all the games. I know that it is hard modded since I remember being able to burn CD’s and play them. I don’t know what kind of modchip it was, though.

My question is, will I be able to play from the USB drive? Should I soft mod it first? Can I even soft mod even if there’s already a hard mod chip? Also, I remember a long time ago that some games gave me an error. If I play from a USB drive, will I be able to play those games?

Provided your USB ports aren't broken yes. I would if I where you. Yes you can have both a softmod and a modchip installed. I cant really answer your last question without knowing the error but, you should be able to.

just to be clear, any hard modded wii will be able to play games from a usb device, provided it's formatted properly? (MS-DOS FAT)? like i don't have to soft mod prior?

also, i found a guide that says it is best to install the softmod on a wii on 4.3. can i update my hard modded wii (3.4) to that so i can soft mod it, so i can play from the usb?

Sorry for the late response but no. You should definitely update to 4.3, 3.4 is super dated. All that the hard mod does is bypass copy protection on the disc drive. Update to 4.3 then follow a guide to do the rest, preferably wii.guide (though I am a bit biased when it comes to choosing a guide due to my affiliations with the creators.)

Oh, but it says if I update to 4.3 (beyond 4.1), something will happen to the modchip? Will i be able to update thru the intrinsic wii update software given that i have a modchip in place?
