Started downgrading my friends 3ds XL and when I came back I had a black screen. System won't boot up with the sd card in but without it will. Says im on 9.2 firmware. Should I upgrade with my shovel knight game and try downgrading again? Or is there a better solution

Delete EXT data from the sd card. It happens with almost every downgrade I've done thus far.

Just do what KunoichiZ said, then rerun the downgrade! :D
Did and successful downgrade then went to black screen. Guessing it was completed. Memory card my friend got me works until I try to make a syand backup and the program doesn't recognize the mEmory card

Try backing up the memory card, then formatting it and dragging the files back. Make sure it is formatted to FAT 32.

You need to boot it without the sd card in the system. Once it's started up, insert SD card and downgrade again. You will probably need to to change the payload to 9.2 so it launches HBL.

This is no proof of frankenfirmware AT ALL...

Ext data sometimes is incompatible between system versions and thats why it was hanging with the SD card inside, all you had to do was delete the ext data folder and use the system like you normally would...

No haven't tried to format it. Didn't have this issue with my 2 n3ds systems

It doesnt happen every single time, so just because it didnt happen with your other systems doesnt prove you have a frankenfirmware this time around.

All these people telling you to run the downgrade program again are clueless...
