okay say I have a9lh completely installed on my new 3ds with luma and fbi. I am on the latest firmware but I am going to get a gateway card so I can play ds and 3ds roms. Do I have to have emunand, or be on 9.2 still? If I do how do I do this exactly?

I don't? Okay that would be even better, where do I go to do that then?
Download whatever cias you want and install them through FBI.
Just be careful when installing cias and keep a nand backup saved away in a cloud storage website just in case anything screws up.

Get your 3ds games in .cia format and play ds games with this 20 buck flashcart http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=149
Okay sweet, I thought I still had to get a gateway to play 3ds games.

I have a backup of everything so far and have freeshop also, didn't know if I needed that

Its in the thrid line of the FAQ of a9lh guide
Q: I heard about this thing I have to pay for (Gateway, Sky3DS, etc), is that something I need?
A: No. arm9loaderhax is a superior method of loading hax that runs early in boot and opens up the opportunity for things such as true custom firmware.

FreeShop can download 3ds games too.

Please don't get a Gateway. Not only is it useless if you have A9LH, because you can already play 3DS games by installing CIA files or by using freeShop, but using Gateway with an A9LH sysNAND is an easy way to accidentally update and remove A9LH or brick.
