I recently came into possession of a extra wii u console without the game pad my question is can I use MY game pad to mod the extra console then just play the modded wii u with your basic wii remote and leave MY wii u and game pad original

Sure, just keep in mind a lot of games will ask you to use the wii u gamepad at some point or another

For example, I believe New Super Mario Bros U will always make player 1 use the gamepad in multiplayer

Or Xenoblade X will let you play with a pro con but you won't be able to warp/manage probes (very important)

Cool thinks this will be my 1st mod so I wanted to try it on extra console just incase, then I could use it when I go on vacations and such.

It depends on the game.

Many games work without a GamePad, many partially require it, many require it full stop, and some games (e.g. Lego City Undercover) straight up don't support connecting anything but a GamePad.

Worry not though, outside of stability issues, if you have a device you can use Vanilla on, chances are you'd be able to completely substitute it for the real GamePad.

FYI, GameCube games are an edge case, not all wireless controllers would work, so if you want to play these games, keep that in mind while packing your Wii U for vacation -- I dealt with input glitches in Nintendont even though it looks like the controller simply wasn't compatible.

Game settings can be modified with a Pro controller if you use the 'Better Settings' plugin for Aroma. It can redirect the gamepad screen to a TV and allow control with the Pro controller.
