i have a r4 2014 3ds dsi dual core smart update flash card with 2014 on the sticker, i was wondering if this would work for a 2ds i bought only a couple days ago for christmas? and if not what would be the best to buy?

From the version number you mention, I assume that the package look like this one, right? http://www.r4isdhc.com/
If the answer is yes, 2014 is 2 years ago, and this site has a reputation about inlude time bomb/kill switch in their cards.
So, I won't think this flash card gonna works unlesss you set your 2DS time to 2014.

I hear that the newest (2016) kernel usually works on these carts since they are the same cart in hardware.

@gnmmarechal mentioned that although it's the same hardware, the time bomb won't make it boot unless you set your 2DS time to 2014.
I never use one myself and won't bother buying it for test since I already have DSTT that still in working state.
I won't recommend it cause it's too old & current state of products you could find is not good.

It will if you use the newest kernel.

Iirc, the time bomb is on the kernel itself. So using a more recent one may do the trick. But, it's a shitty move nonetheless.
