Hacking Firmware 9.8 to 11.8 update possible?

I just got my hands on a New 3DS with FW 9.8 installed. I will probably cfw it, using the guide where you use the Soundhax method.
After installing the bootstrap and CFW, would I then be able to go online and download fw 11.8 from Nintendo's server when it prompts without worry, or do I have to reapply something?

As long as you have the latest version of luma, you will have no problem if you update to the latest 3DS version.

during your installation of CFW via https://3ds.hacks.guide (follow this guide) it will let you know when to update your console,

just make sure you follow the steps fully

Ah, yes, I reread the guide and found the step mentioned on page 5, Finalizing Setup, where it says you update the system at Section III step 17.
