FFXIV Announced, PS3 Exclusive, MMO.

Looks like the PlayStation 3 is getting a double dose of Final Fantasy next year, as Sony reveals a new online Final Fantasy XIV for the PlayStation 3. Yes, XIV.

A complete and utter surprise to the entire audience, Final Fantasy XIV will be coming to the PlayStation 3 exclusively next year, assumedly after Final Fantasy XIII is released. A brief trailer was shown which looked very much like Final Fantasy XI, with the text "A new online epic begins."

So it sounds like an exclusive, massively multiplayer online game for the PlayStation 3. We'll have more as soon as there is more to have!

If this is anything like FFXI then it is doomed to fail I'm sorry to say. I'm completely surprised they announced it though but why they announced it while they were still working on FFXIII/Versus/Agito is beyond me. On top of that, they still have KHBBS to work on.

Most of the funds that Square has made so far were put into XIII's budget (Or so I believe, since they've been releasing the same stuff over and over), so I don't think this game will do very well. Unless they plan on releasing more remakes/ports in order to fund this one too.

There is no way this will be free. It's going to be a full blown MMO just like XI.

The online will be free but this may be a pay to play game (with the disk containing containing no maps, lack of customization, only default weapons, etc.)

Either way, this is still doomed to fail. If the gameplay is anywhere near the same as FFXI, this is gonna fall badly. Why the hell are they making it as an MMO? Final Fantasy games suck as MMO (as demonstrated by FFXI). Huge disappointment.

Just to clarify, SquareEnix is so big and powerful they could be working on 5 different RPGs and still have resources to pull all minor plataforms like DS, iPhone and PSP. Besides, every fist Final Fantasy announcement is at least two years prior it's release, so expect it to come on 2011 for US and EU.

Funny now I understand why FFXI was never fully 'ported' to PS3, this means that FFXIV was already in planning or in development some months back.

It's a simultaneous worldwide release. We'll get it 2010 so its not long of a wait. And yes I do believe you're right. After doing research on the game, I found it that the game was codenamed "Rapture" which they hinted at back in 2005 which means its been in development for almost 5 years. Funny thing, "Rapture" was in development for PS3, Microsoft Windows, and 360 and why they'd drop it for 360 is beyond me but maybe its hinting it won't be a PS3 exclusive for long. Also this was in development longer then all 3 FFXIII games so maybe it won't be all shit and it will actually be good. We may have jumped the gun too soon..
