Homebrew Emulators or Virtual Console Injections?

Which is fastest/smoothest in terms of emulation? When I tried Picodrive with Knuckles Chaotix and some other Megadrive Games it was somewhat clunky and slow, with the sound being a bit off, whereas those issues were fine on a VC Injection with the Megadrive games.

To the quick point; which are the best emulators for the Megadrive, SNES and GBA for 3DS? Should I bother using them or just stick to VC Injections?
