If the PSP can run a kinda good n64 emulator i think the 3DS wont have much problems emulating a decent n64 emulator (36d4 DS?)

(didn't read the whole thread so someone might've said this already)
There is a huge difference between 2D games (2D sprites) and 3D games (3D models with polygons and all that)
The whole thing about 3D is giving you two different perspectives of a scene. And that means having parallax and seeing two sides of an object. Parallax is that effect in which close objects move quickly when you sidestep but far away ones move slowly. This is possible on older games, like NES and SNES, etc. But you cant show two different perspectives of a 2D sprite because it is... 2D! You can give it a 3D effect but it's like you have a far away sheet of paper and a paper character on the front. If it gets 3D effect, it'll look like a flat thing in front of a background.

Yes, that is the concept we were talking about.

The possibility is there, but once you begin to understand how the SNES works, and what is required to base the "depth" from, that possibility begins to dwindle. In all honesty, if the SNES were more like the GBA, then I could see something becoming of the idea of giving 2D the 3D effect, since the GBA is more like using whole sheets of paper than having sheets of paper with smaller cutouts of those sheets in front or behind the other sheets with cutouts to make it look like there are no cutouts.

But i was not talking only about Snes emulation. The Super Mario World example were only this: an example.
I was talking about emulators in general. Snes, Nes, Genesis, Gba, Gbx, Atari, Msx, Dos, etc.

I know handling the layers is not easy (and it was better explained to me by DiscostewSM), but i also mentioned that if a game gets too ugly with this effect, you could just use the slider to get rid of it.

I don't remember where I read this, but Nintendo themselves have said they're looking into remaking 2D games with the 3D effect. Dunno if that would be emulation though.

I would love to see a genesis emulator in 3d!
As far as the layering and things goes, the user could adjust the depth of backgrounds and sprites through a menu in the emulator. The settings could be saved to a file and shared or distributed with the emulator.

I'm not running comparisons between the two systems, but Warioland on the Virtual Boy achieved this effect (and was a great game), as did all games for the Virtual Boy. While people like to bash this system for its failures, it achieved the 3D parallax layers that everyone is talking about in this thread. Personally, I'd love to see 2D games given this treatment on the 3DS, and before E3 2010, I actually thought this was what the 3DS was going to offer. You can only imagine how excited I was (as everyone else) when they showed that it's capable of true 3D.

Meh, I don't think Retro games will be turned into 3D. Besides the 8/16-Bit times are like not made for 3D.
