Gaming Dragon Quest IX Grottos?

What are the grotto's on Dragon Quest IX? Can you encounter them whenever you want, do you need cheats, or is it from quests?

u receive treasure maps from different people throughout the game. When you activate the treasure map, it show an area on the top screen, you have to find that area and then a grotto appears.

As far as helping's involved in the grotto's I guess they give quite a bit of EXP and fair amount of money, so yeah, and you get a new map every time you defeat a boss. :3

The bosses of each Grotto have a chance to drop certain incredibly powerful equipment or items that are used for alchemy to make incredibly powerful equipment.
