Doesn't auto brightness use more battery?

I don't think it uses the camera, I think its an IR sensor.

As for battery consumption it would depend on how bright you had your screen with it off. If you always have it on full auto brightness might save some battery.

most likely not. brightness is one of the big factors when it comes to battery consumption, but auto brightness is supposed to brighten or dim depending on the ambient lighting of your environment.

Higher brightness would always consume more battery that lower battery, it come down to if you are annoyed by the changing brightness, for me I would just stick to manual brightness, I have mine set to the highest level with auto brightens off and power saver mode off.

I have power saver mode on but with screen filters to make it look like non-power saver mode. Does that help or is that like saying your counting calories but eating half a pizza in one sitting?

It still run under power saver mode even if you have the filter, just that probably harder for you to tell probably.
