So on facebook, I shared someone else's post ( it wasn't like a private message) and wrote a response to it of why I thought it was wrong. I didn't say anything about the guy making the post, but I criticized the post itself.

The thing one of the people on facebook responded to my post and said it was doxing.

So I asked him how is it doxing if I am referring to what he posted on his facebook publicly.

and he said it was doxing because this is something he talked about on his facebook account and sharing it with his own friends, and sharing their post to other people would classify as doxing them

So as far as I am aware, doxing means sharing private information and secret information. but I didn't do any of that, and it is not like I gave any of his information away. I just reacted to what he said on facebook. But at the same time, I like to hear other people views about it.

so does this classify as doxing?

Check whether his post was posted with "friends" or "friends of friends" or "world" or whatever options there are. Sharing something he doesn't want to share with anyone but his friends isn't nice... But it's not doxxing either way. Doxxing is when you post personal information about someone online. Often with the intent of psychological warfare.

Like: kingtut is Name Nameson from Cityville, Stateizona, USA. Address street 123, phone number 1234567.
That'd be doxxing.

the only thing I could think of is that maybe if his facebook was private (as in friends only) and If I shared his post, then maybe that would classify as doxing. but even then I sh

yeah, that makes me feel better then. cause most of the times people talked about doxing. they are talking about addresses or phone numbers being leaked. but anyone can go online and find anyone facebook account.

dammit facebook, why can't I reply or click like on something without sharing it to my friends, -.-
he has a public facebook account, and he is actually the president of a political club. so it is not like he is being secretive about it. anyone can simply look up his views by simply searching for their facebook account. That is like someone saying I am doxing trump or Hillary because I react to their posts on facebook all the time.

wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy late and slightly of topic response but

my only issue is that I can't respond or like the weeb trash stuff my friends post cause I don't want to subject my family's feed to the shit

funny thing one of my friends posted a bunch of false info about her (from a pm) on fb found out the guy was on parole the guy got mad called the fbi and after sorting though evidence HE was the one charged with like extortion

I think this new term of "doxing" is dumb, and I'm kinda tired of hearing it to be honest...

Off topic: I wish people would fight in real life, like they used to. Settle your differences with a bare-knuckle brawl, without anyone else intervening until one of the two people is knocked the fuck out. :yayswitch:

https://trends.google.co.uk/trends/explore?date=all&q=doxxing would seem to indicate it has been going since 2012. Book results seem thinner on the ground though. It has become more prevalent these last few years, though mainly as people realise how easy it is and as more people make it even easier.

DOX as a term within hacking goes back many more years -- search NFOs for dox division, here is one from 1994 https://textfiles.rolz.org/piracy/NFO/tpcx.nfo
