This is not a debate about the ethics of piracy, nor is it an SX OS vs Atmosphere debate. I am not trying to encourage anyone to change their ways.
There are various advantages and disadvantages of hacking your Switch. Here are the main ones:
Advantages:
- Free games
- Overclocking
- Save editing
- Cheats
- Mods
Disadvantages:
- More games than you can possibly play
- Risk of a ban from online services
- Risk of a brick
- Requires time and effort from the end user
I don't have any statistics but I suspect most people hacking their Switches are interested in free games.
Imagine the following two situations:
- You spend $400 on a Switch, hack it and brick it. All you have left is a pair of Joycons, dock and AC adaptor. Your save data and money is gone. You now need to spend another $400 on a new Switch and wait for déjà-vú or go legit and spend more money on the games you want to play.
- You spend $400 on a Switch and another $400 on the games you want to play. Your Switch does not get bricked.
Some people here would have been better off not hacking their Switches.
On the other hand, you can save money by pirating games and enjoy a better user experience thanks to overclocking, save editing, cheats and mods. SX OS makes piracy and cheats very user-friendly.
At the time of writing, avoiding a ban is easy with SX OS emuNAND or more complicated and time consuming by making and restoring NAND backups. You might not care about a ban because unless you really love Splatoon 2 the online services suck anyway.
My opinion on piracy is you should buy physical copies of the games you intend to play and enjoy playing them. It's simpler, risk free and you wont waste time hoarding games you'll never actually play. I don't give two shits about the ethics of piracy, you do what you want.
