The type-C spec supports both HDMI and Displayport, but the Switch was in development before HDMI was added. it might be using Displayport with then dock converting to HDMI. If someone is willing, I'd ask them to get a type-c to HDMI adapter and a type-C to Displayport adapter and see if one of them works.

When HDMI is used with type-C, there aren't enough pins left over for USB SuperSpeed. Since we know the Switch has 1 SuperSpeed port, the dock pretty much has to be doing Displayport -> HDMI
