I'm thinking about purchasing a wiikey2, I've got a launch wii, is that the best option? Is there any difference between wiikey and wiikey2? please answer!

Wiikey v1 has been abandoned and drive speed on the latest firmware is apparently locked at 3x.

Between Wiikey v1 and v2, get v2. But since you have an older drive... I'd also consider getting a YAOSM chip.

What, so WiiKey v1 just drive 3x?

YAOSM chip? enlighten me.
It's an open source modchip with most of the features of the major chips that only works on the older drives. So it's really cheap to get and works great.

Either way, they're both great chips.

I've modded a friend's with a WiiKey v1...and I'm sure they never had the slow movie which I get with Softmii in Mario Kart. IIRC I updated it to 1.9x

And to answer the OP's title question: For sure the D2CKey and D2Pro run at 6x...never known slowdown/stutters with those chips. I expect others are the same.

3x with a modchip seems to have no issues with movies, unlike softmods.

I'd almost go as far as to say 3x can be faster... if your media is dodgy, and the wii has to retry constantly!

I doubt you'll notice the difference real world. That said, I have my wasabi set to 6x read. I might turn it back to 3x if I play lots of Bully, or a game that constantly reads like it does.
