Do I need an SD card to mod OLED?

In Sthetix guide the first thing he does is insert the SD card into the switch before modding it. I haven't bought my 1TB SD card yet as I was planning on installing the chip first in case I brick. Can I update the firmware and install Instinct NX V6 without an SD card? I also have a 64GB SD card I could use for the mean time.

I'm assuming Instinct NX will need a payload to work, if that's the case, you will need a microSD card for it to have where to load it from.

You can mod it before. It will just ask for a SD Card when you try to boot it.
But you can't do anymore than that without it.

I want to install the chip first and if I see SD Card screen, then I will buy expensive micro SD.
