DLL Injecting Failing in VM

I've been working on a program on and off for a while now that requires DLL injection, at the moment I'm using a reflective DLL loader. It works fine on my desktop but it fails when I run it in a VM. The process I'm trying to inject is explorer, but my code crashes explorer. I'm building all x64 code and my VM and desktop are running Windows 10 Pro x64, any ideas as to why Explorer is crashing?
