It's not like Sony's design is much different from Nintendo's; it has a small hole in the middle, which back then was needed to avoid infringing Nintendo's patent, but the inside the controller is virtually identical. Granted, up until the PS3 the edges where a bit too rough, which could result in a sore thumb after a while; however the DS4 really nailed how a dpad should feel like.
IMO the DS4 has the best dpad ever made (barring maybe the one on PS Vita, which I've never tried), with the Wii Classic Controller as a close second. What I don't understand is all the praise the Japanese Saturn controller gets, those were easily the worst money I've ever spent in my life - after the ticket for Suicide Squad, that is.
