I feel that the time has come to get buy my first new home console since my Dreamcast. Obviously the only contender is a Wii. I haven't paid much attention to all the Wii happenings here over the last few years so I'm completely out of the loop regarding the various chips and backup loader type things available. So...

How much of a hastle are the backup loaders to use at the moment? Is there much work to do when you burn the ISO? What about launching the games? I've heard talk of a homebrew channel (what is a channel in Wii terminology anyway?) and something about needing a legit copy of Zelda but beyond that I'm uneducated.

If I get a chipped one (which I'm perfectly prepared to do if the loader option is a pain) is there any reason not to get a WiiKey? I've found somewhere that'll sell me a Wii for £200 precmodded with a WiiKey so if it's a decent chip then I'll probably go for it.

    Thanks for your help folks.

hey dude and welcome to the world of Wii lol

if you want complete compatibility then go for a hardmod and the Wiikey is a good chip although there is a Wiikey2 out now...

the loaders are really moving fast though, i would say compatibility is around the 90% mark so far and could be increased with the release of Gamma which is coming anyday now...

channels are basically icons on the Wii's home screen that load stuff up i.e Games, Internet, Emulators and such, just do a youtube search for the homebrew channel and you'll see what we mean..

if your going to get a new console get in there soon and try and get hold of a retail copy of Zelda Twilight Princess, apparently theres some issues with which version of the game can be used some say the new version is patched others say any versions works..

Twilight Hack check this out and you'll see what i mean.

buy a wiiwasp or other d2pro variation, worth the money.

I'd say right now if you install every variation of launcher/loader, you can have 95% compatibility,
but be ready for some common errors and slow speeds.

So you install the launcher on the Wii itself do you? Once you've got the launcher installed is it a nuissance booting up the games or will they boot directly?

Is it right that I need a copy of Zelda to do it?

Thanks for the help guys - I love this place!

you loader can be installed as a seperate channel next to the official Disc Channel that nintendo uses..(Wii's dont boot games from start up they are loaded via a channel..)

however with the next version of the launcher do to be released you will be able to launch backups from the Disc Channel to after launching a simple program.

That sounds great, thanks! I think for the time being at least I can live without a chip then. Maybe I'll get it done later if it becomes a pain in the neck.

I can't believe how quickly the loaders have become usefull. I caught a bit of the hype from the first proof of concept a few weeks back but I didn't imagine for a second that they would be viable alternatives to chips so quickly.

A hearty congratulations to all involved!

I think they were called undercutters or something like that. It was for a 'refurbished' Wii with a preinstalled WiiKey.

I've gone off the idea now. I'm gonna get one off ebay with a bunch of extra controllers instead.

I tend to buy everything off ebay and I'm yet to get my fingers burned. Only a matter of time though I suppose.
