Did you do anything different to get it working, perhaps using a different region or dump than the one that was freezing/blackscreening at?
Mind disclosing how you achieved this?
I tried a few different gba rom dumps and even prebuilt cia's without any success, so I'm more curious about replicating your results than obtaining your file.

I used the EU version of the rom but i'm pretty confident that the US version would work just the same for what I did lol

Mini tutorial for what I did below bud:

Open up gbata, then load in your rom and patch the SRAM so that it creates the "output super puzzle fighter file"that you'll be using in the next part of the tutorial. Then open up the 3DS GBA Footer Generator and instead of keeping everything to default change save type to SRAM,FRAM (128kbit) and save chip manufacturer to 0xC0 (SRAM <V112,FRAM,FLASH V131) then hit create and make the .cia like you normally would! That seemed to work for me and got me past the Capcom opening, I played the game and everything I choose Ryu and went some girl with a white head band and blue skirt, fyi not a fan of the series but I wanted to help you out since you went out of your way to help me thank you and let me know if it works for you k :D

Let me know if there's something you don't understand k bud :) I can post picks if you need them :)

Ah, I could have sworn I tried patching the sram already with gbata, but I must have neglected to realize that the footer generator wouldn't detect the new change to save type automatically and require manual intervention.

When I mentioned trying patching SMA1 myself today and having no luck, I also neglected to change the save type in the footer generator, so that might explain the lack of results I saw there.
Perhaps this is a proper nonhex technique to achieve working results in that as well?

Either way, I really appreciate you poking around to find this out and actually getting it working, I'm looking forward to replicating the results myself!

Super Mario Advance 4 works perfect with your method.
