Hardware Compact Flash to IDE or IDE SSD

The title says it all. I want to know which is better and why and which one I should go with. I'm unsure if the IDE SSD deliverers more performance than compact flash.

It depends on the drives. There are some dead slow IDE SSDs, but even though generally have better performance that a regular mechanical IDE drive. There are also slow and fast CF cards.

Most devices that still use IDE drives have pretty slow interfaces which may be easy to max out.

For what purpose? If you're talking about as your main rig you do not want Compact Flash. Those Compact Flash adapters are great for certain niche purposes (like some older machines) but not on your modern rig. No no no. You'd want an SSD for that.

Consider that it's hard to buy an average-performance CF over 1/2 GB nowadays, only the super expensive ones are "commonly" found (as top-end cameras -also a bad deal-, at least until a generation ago, have long been the only mainstream use; and few hardcore photographers want all their photos in one basket, so larger capacities are still out)

If it fits (of course you're asking for an HDD iPod or a Thinkpad X41), best bang for the buck is most likely SATA with a decent quality converter...

the laptop is a Compaq Armada 7800 and I originally thought it was SCSI. I noticed there where Phillips head screws so I popped it open and it was mini IDE to SCSI which is interesting to say the least
