I think it would be ok. The reasoning is that we would have a universal spec system that practically any one could program. Plus we wold have access to the GPU without a direct X leash. It looks to me to be a programmable console. Sure the case mod is kinda retro but I think that's just for marketing purposes. If it becomes popular it could be quite good. Even just as a barebones hobby PC. I don't really think it is supposed to rival any custom built PC at all and the Commodore OS might be ok.
An universal spec system would be something akin to what FPGAArcade is doing, not a crappy x86 mini-ITX board in a custom case

This is probably the farthest thing from a console EVER. And I'm pretty sure that the "awesome" CommodoreOS will just be a reskinned Linux

It's a total rip-off

Case Modding been around for a while - in fact a google search found THIS (posted 2003)

So what's next - a PC inside a Atari ???.... Oh hang on - THAT'S already been done.... and what about a ZX81 ???
(OK that one's a cheat - that only has the PC inside & the keyboard don't work... but that was made in 2008)

I loved the C64, but never particularly thought the case design was anything special. I liked the 64c design better to be honest. Still, a nostalgic case design means nothing to me. I can (and have) built better computers than what they are offering. Sure, mine might not LOOK like an old C64, but the C64 emulator I have on it works just the same.

It's the games and apps of that era that I fell in love with, not the case design. And let's face it, most of those old games and apps didn't age well and are laughable these days. Many of those old games I've thought about fondly didn't seem half as good as I remembered them when I played them again decades later.

very old computer from the 80's for 600$.
Do not want.

Technically, it's a casemod.

But still, I could get a non-functional one to rip apart and build one myself for easily half of that money.

They should build a decent PC ( and by decent I mean good enough to play new games just as good as the Xbox360 and PS3, especially those ported from the consoles ) into a C64 shell and:

- Add an HDMI port to connect to HDTV or PC monitor.
In fact, today home TVs are just as good as PC monitors, so very much like in the 80's people won't need to buy a monitor, when you can just hook it up to the TV !

- USB ports, for controllers, mouses, external hard drives and so on.

- WiFi Internet, just like a netbook so you can surf the internet in the living room

- At least 1 TB internal hard disk drive.

- A good internal video card capable of visual on par or better then PS3/xbox360 and enough memory and processing power to support it.

- Optional: A built in C64 emulator ( for those not smart enough to download and set up one )

- DVD/BR player to watch HD movies on your TV !

Yeah , pretty much, like in the 80's, a piece of electronics to get as an alternative to a home console, that can play games and do so much more !
Called a Home Computer !

but I went and put together a machine with everything they listed for $298 in parts. You can pick up an old C64 to pull apart for $60-$80 on eBay, assuming you go with Buy It Now instead of waiting patiently for a good deal.

Is it a shock that you can buy the parts cheaper than buying a ready made system? The same can be said for Dell/Compaq/Apple etc.

If CUSA were buying c64's and ripping out the insides and putting a pc inside it, they'd get flamed no matter how much they sold it for.

I'm not in the market for this type of machine anyway, you can't really make a laptop in the style of a c64 ( and no I don't want a PC in a SX-64 style case ).

USB BluRay burner in a 1541 case for the low low price of $500 sounds like the next logical step. Or for the budget conscious, a DVD burner 1541 for $250.
