So basically this is just Linux OS with a new skin? Are they offering anything new that makes it worthwhile?

But I don't understand why they want to compete with Microsoft now after they have complete dominancy in the OS world. They should've started this a few years ago when XP came out or even 2000 but now I think its too late for them to try to be a threat or competitor to Microsoft.

The same could have been said with Mozilla and Firefox. They now have like over 30% of the browser market share while IE is on like 60% or something.

The only problem with that is that is IE has been out only 3-4 more years the FireFox. It's been 10 years since IE was first introduced. It took Google 10 years to come out with a browser and then step into the OS World while it took Microsoft 20 years to get where they're at today. And Windows has a lot to offer while Chrome OS doesn't look like it has a lot but its too early for me to say that.

For those questioning if it will work for gaming, take a look at Gaikai and OnLive. I think these and other flash games are the only games for it.

I don't think it will have any "applications" as such. No .exes, no .apps etc. I think it is literally "switch on your laptop to get on chrome and use google's online tools". I think EVERYTHING will be web based.

It bothers me about what apps google will have for this, If they have Google Docs as a substitute to microsoft office, it will fail (unless they majorly update it), plus a host of other new applications...

Another thing that is worrying :- we all know Google records what you do when on google services, and they sell this information to other companies. Imagine EVERYTHING you do is recorded and sold to businesses. Transparency.

1) it will run all linux apps, even if they need to be compiled specially I am sure a fanbase will set itself up and start doing that soon after release.
2) it has been proven from packet sniffing android phones that they don't send details of your texts or anything, I doubt they would do a thing like that.
